Frustrated with this career low, he decided to audition for last year’s X Factor in a last-ditch attempt to land a solo record deal after years struggling in different bands.

It turned out to be a move he will never regret as he went on to win the show.

And next month the former Father Christmas, painter and decorator, labourer and factory worker will release his debut album, Letters.

It’s a collection of songs masterminded by the key players behind Robbie Williams’ solo success and will be released on the same label as Kings Of Leon and Bruce Springsteen.

But 28-year-old Matt, from Halstead, Essex, could have had a very different life after an early brush with the law.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the former public schoolboy confessed: “I did take a Beretta handgun into school when I was 11.

“I was at a posh private school in Essex, then my dad got made redundant and we went to the local school down the road.

“I went round to a mate’s house and he said he had a gun.
